Ghana's Parliament is set to undergo a significant transformation with the upcoming inauguration of the 9th Parliament on January 6, 2025. As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to occupy the Minority side of the House, a key question remains: who will lead the NPP caucus?

According to Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the ideal candidate for the position of Minority Leader. Osei Owusu, who has worked closely with Afenyo-Markin, believes that his exceptional understanding of parliamentary procedures and deep knowledge of the House's leadership dynamics make him the perfect fit for the role.

Afenyo-Markin's experience as a former Deputy Majority Leader and his promotion to Majority Leader in February 2024 have equipped him with the necessary skills to lead the NPP caucus effectively. His expertise will be crucial in fostering a unified and strategic approach to counter the anticipated overwhelming majority of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament'

Osei Owusu emphasized the importance of longevity and experience in leadership positions, citing the example of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who served as both Minority and Majority Leader. He believes that Afenyo-Markin's experience and clarity of thought make him the ideal candidate to lead the NPP caucus in the 9th Parliament.

“I strongly believe in longevity and experience from our own actions and inactions. You can tell that when Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was the Minority Leader and Majority Leader, he stood out very clearly. But it did not happen by accident,'' he stated.

“He started as a Chief Whip and grew up to become a leader. The longevity brings experience and clarity so I would not support any request for a new person to be brought into the picture now. If you ask me, let Alexander Afenyo-Markin continue,'' he added.
