Minority MPs Walk Out of Parliament in Support of Detained Chairman Wontumi

Accra, Ghana - 29 May, 2025 - Ghana's Minority Members of Parliament have taken a strong stance in support of NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, who has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial improprieties. In a bold move, the Minority MPs walked out of Parliament, boycotting proceedings until Chairman Wontumi is released.
Chairman Wontumi remained in EOCO custody despite being granted GH¢50 million bail, as he couldn't fulfill the conditions. In response, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin declared the Minority would boycott parliamentary proceedings until the bail conditions are relaxed and Chairman Wontumi is freed.
In a show of solidarity, the Minority MPs chanted a line from Ghana's national anthem and walked out of Parliament, marching to the EOCO offices to press their demands.
