Ofosu-Adjare Pledges to Revitalize Komenda Sugar Factory as Trade Minister
Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare is Minister Designate for Trade, Industry and Agribusiness

Accra, Ghana - 22 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Minister-Designate for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has stressed the urgent need to revive the dormant Komenda Sugar Factory.

The factory's inactivity has been largely due to a persistent shortage of raw materials, which has significantly hindered its operations.

During her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, Ofosu-Adjare emphasized the importance of revamping the factory to reduce Ghana's reliance on sugar imports. She committed to collaborating with relevant ministries to assess the factory's current state and transform it into a valuable asset for the country.

Ofosu-Adjare noted that the factory's challenges include a lack of raw materials and missing parts, despite funds being allocated to address these issues. She pledged to evaluate the factory's overall health and work towards ensuring its successful operation, which would benefit Ghanaians and reduce the country's sugar import bill of approximately half a million dollars.

“I have been told that as we speak, the Komenda Sugar Factory is not operational and one of the major challenges the factory has suffered is the lack of raw materials to feed that industry and some missing parts.

“I have also been told that monies were released to solve these problems. And the total health of the factory should be done after an evaluation. So I will work to ensure we know the actual health of the factory.

“But it’s obvious we need that factory to work for the benefit of Ghanaians because we are importing about half a million dollars worth of sugar into the country. And so once I take office, I will work together with the ministry to ensure we assess the health of the factor and ensure Ghana benefits from that monumental project,'' she added
