Minority MPs Stage Sit-in Protest at EOCO Over Chairman Wontumi's Detention

Accra, Ghana - 29 May, 2025 - Tensions ran high in Accra on Thursday, May 29, as Minority Members of Parliament staged a dramatic sit-in protest outside the EOCO headquarters, demanding the release of Chairman Wontumi, the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

The MPs, led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, marched from Parliament and took over portions of the street in front of EOCO's office, drawing significant public attention and bringing traffic to a standstill.

The protest was sparked by Wontumi's continued detention by EOCO after failing to meet the conditions of a GH₵50 million bail granted on Wednesday, May 28. Wontumi was arrested on Tuesday, May 27, following a summons by the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, and is being investigated over alleged financial irregularities involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK). The Minority MPs decried what they described as political persecution and the weaponisation of state institutions against political opponents.

NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, condemned the "increasing politicisation of EOCO," adding fuel to an already tense political atmosphere. As Wontumi's legal team races to meet bail conditions.

Meanwhile, EOCO remains tight-lipped about the investigation, declining to disclose any details.
