Maternal Mortality Epidemic Hits Ashanti Region: 1,000 Deaths Recorded between 2020 and 2024

Kumasi, Ghana - 16 March, 2025 - The Ashanti Region is grappling with a devastating maternal mortality crisis, with 1,000 women losing their lives during childbirth between 2020 and 2024 according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

This alarming figure has sparked urgent calls for stronger interventions to curb the high rate of maternal deaths.

Regional Health Director Dr. Frank Adomanko Boateng sounded the alarm at the 2024 Regional Health Forum, warning that time is running out to meet national and global targets aimed at reducing maternal mortality.

Ghana is racing against the clock to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030.

The current figures indicate that the region is lagging behind, and Dr. Boateng emphasized the need to intensify efforts to bridge the gap within the next six years.

“Time is not on our side as we wish to achieve the target of 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030. The clock is ticking and we must double our efforts,'' he stated.

The Ghana Health Service has pledged to work tirelessly to improve access to quality maternal healthcare services, including skilled delivery, emergency obstetric, and newborn care.

However, the task ahead remains daunting, and the region's healthcare system faces significant challenges in its bid to reduce maternal mortality.
