Health Minister Inaugurates Taskforce to Oversee 'MahamaCares' Implementation

Accra, Ghana - 12 March, 2025 - Ghana's Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated a taskforce to oversee the implementation of MahamaCares, a initiative aimed at providing financial support to individuals suffering from chronic and debilitating illnesses.
The program, championed by President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to address the financial barriers that prevent many Ghanaians from accessing quality healthcare.
According to Hon. Akandoh, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has improved medical coverage, but it does not fully alleviate the financial burden of treating chronic diseases. The MahamaCares initiative is designed to fill this gap, ensuring that no Ghanaian has to choose between their health and financial stability.
The nine-member taskforce, chaired by Rev. Prof. Emeritus Seth Aryeetey, has been tasked with developing a robust policy and legal framework, designing a sustainable funding model, and evaluating Ghana's healthcare infrastructure.
The team has five weeks to submit its report and recommendations.
The initiative is a response to the growing burden of chronic diseases in Ghana, which account for 42% of all deaths in the country.
The taskforce's work will be crucial in addressing this challenge and ensuring that Ghanaians have access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation.
Key Objectives of MahamaCares:
- Provide financial support to individuals with chronic and debilitating illnesses
- Develop a robust policy and legal framework
- Design a sustainable funding model
- Evaluate Ghana's healthcare infrastructure
- Ensure fairness and accessibility in healthcare
