Dampare's Removal was not Personal - Kwakye Ofosu

Accra, Ghana - 16 March, 2025 - Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu has praised the outgoing Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for his contributions to the Ghana Police Service.

Dr. Dampare's removal from office was part of President John Dramani Mahama's ongoing efforts to reform the security sector.

Dr. Dampare, who served as IGP since 2021, implemented key reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures. Kwakye Ofosu acknowledged Dr. Dampare's expertise and experience, saying he remains a valuable asset to the country.

“We can only wish Dampare well and thank him for his services. With his experience, he remains valuable and should be in high demand in other areas where his expertise is needed.

Speaking on The KeyPoints on TV3  on Saturday March 15, the Minister emphasized that the President has the authority to appoint and remove officials, including the IGP.

President Mahama appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector-General of Police, effective Friday, March 14. 

Kwakye Ofosu described Dr. Dampare's removal as a routine leadership change, noting that new leaders often make changes to align institutions with their vision.

He expressed his best wishes to Dr. Dampare, highlighting his bright future ahead, given his extensive professional experience. 

He reiterated that Dr. Dampare's removal was not personal, but rather a necessary step in the governance process.
