Cholera outbreak hits Ada enclave, claims two lives
Ada, Ghana - October 25, 2024 - A cholera outbreak has hit the Ada East and Ada West districts in Ghana's Greater Accra Region, claiming two lives and infecting 43 people, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reports.
The Director of Public Health at the GHS, Dr. Frank Bekoe, confirmed the outbreak, stating that health authorities are taking swift action to contain the situation.
“So we have 37 confirmed cases from Ada East, and then six confirmed cases in Ada West. For us, we are looking at mortalities. I think that since the outbreak started, we have had two mortalities. And what we are doing is that we are trying to make sure that we identify the cases quite early and identify the contacts and follow them up and that is what we have been doing in our circumstances.”
Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, focusing on early detection, contact tracing, and follow-up to limit the spread.
Residents are advised to take precautions, including frequent handwashing, consuming safe water, and seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms occur.
This outbreak is part of a larger cholera crisis affecting Eastern and Southern Africa, with over 230,000 cases and 4,000 deaths reported across 14 countries since 2023.
