Mahama Tackles Savannah Region Tensions
Ghana ,August 31,2025 - In response to escalating violence in the Savannah Region's Sawla-Bole area,President John Mahama has launched a peace initiative to calm tensions between the Gonja and Brifor communities. After returning from Singapore, Mahama met with key officials, including the National Security Coordinator and Interior Minister, to discuss the conflict's latest developments and strategize a peaceful resolution.
While still abroad, President Mahama held a telephone conversation with the King of Gonja, Yagbonwura Jira Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, to discuss measures to end the clashes and foster lasting peace in the area. The President urged all parties to support the initiatives underway to end the conflict and restore normalcy.
As part of the peace-building effort, President Mahama has dispatched a government delegation led by the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak, to engage with the Yagbonwura and other key stakeholders in the area. The delegation has been tasked with working closely with the Regional Security Council, traditional authorities, and community leaders to foster dialogue, mediate outstanding disputes, and reinforce law and order.
To ensure the safety of residents, security in the region has been reinforced with the deployment of additional police and military personnel to the conflict zone.
The conflict has resulted in significant displacement of residents, with women and children forming the majority of those affected. The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been working to rescue and relocate displaced persons to safer areas. The Ghana Red Cross has also distributed tents and other emergency relief items to support those in need.
In a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President ,Felix Kwaakye Ofosu ,Mahama appealed to all parties involved in the conflict to support the peace initiatives and engage in dialogue to resolve outstanding disputes.
