Akwatia ,Eastern Region,August 31,2025 - The former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, believes that Ernest Kumi's untimely demise was a direct result of the prolonged legal dispute with the NDC over his parliamentary seat. Following a brief battle with illness, Kumi's passing on July 7, 2025, created a vacancy in Akwatia's parliamentary representation, paving the way for a by-election on September 2, 2025.

The NDC had challenged Kumi's victory in the 2024 parliamentary election, claiming the results were illegitimate. Despite the court's eventual dismissal of the petition, Dr. Bawumia believes the prolonged legal tussle took a toll on Kumi's health. "When he won, the NDC rejected the verdict and went to court. He became frustrated, and this raised his blood pressure. But the court affirmed that he was the elected MP. Twenty-six days after the final verdict, he died," Dr. Bawumia stated.

As the by-election approaches, both the NPP and NDC are intensifying their campaigns to win the vacant seat. The NPP is banking on sympathy votes, while the NDC is confident of reclaiming the seat.

In a related development ,security has been beefed up in the constituency, with over 5,000 police personnel deployed to ensure a peaceful election.

Meanwhile ,the Electoral Commission has completed preparations for the by-election, with 52,338 registered voters participating in 119 polling stations. The commission has assured voters of a free, fair, and transparent election.
