Mahama slams NPP over economic hardship, accuses them of collapsing PBC
Western North Region, Ghana - Nov 14, 2024 - Ghana's opposition leader, John Dramani Mahama, has launched a scathing attack on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, accusing it of mismanaging the economy and causing the downfall of Produce Buying Company (PBC), the country's largest indigenous cocoa-buying firm.
Economic Downturn and Company Collapse
Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, highlighted PBC's collapse as a stark example of the government's economic mismanagement. During his presidency, PBC purchased 30% of Ghana's cocoa, but now the company is struggling to stay afloat.
Workers' Plight
The former president drew attention to the dire situation of PBC workers, who have gone unpaid for 8-9 months without a clear timeline for salary payments. This, Mahama argued, is a stark reminder of the government's failure to support local businesses and protect workers' rights.
Campaign Trail Criticisms
Mahama made these remarks while addressing supporters in Enchi Aowin, Western North Region, as part of his campaign trail. He emphasized that the economy has dwindled significantly over the past eight years, with many Ghanaian companies struggling to survive under similar conditions.
“In eight years, the economy has dwindled. When I was president, PBC bought 30 percent of Ghana’s cocoa. Now they can no longer do so.
“The company has collapsed under this government. For eight years, they have not been able to pay the workers as well.”
