Mahama Calls for Unity Among Christian Denominations As He Worships with Clergy in Kumasi

Kumasi, Ghana - 02 March 2025 - President John Dramani Mahama has made a passionate plea for unity among Christian denominations, stressing that a divided church undermines its influence on society.
Speaking at a worship service in Kumasi, the President emphasized the crucial role of the church in promoting moral values and guiding the nation.
“There’s an often-heard argument that while more than 90% of Ghanaians profess to be persons of faith, immorality and crime are on the rise. And my answer to such people who make that argument is that the situation would probably have been worse if there was no church.
“Because consider that there was no church and people could do whatever they wanted. The situation would have been worse. And so the churches are doing their best,” President Mahama told the clergy in Kumasi on Sunday.
President Mahama's remarks come amid concerns over rising immorality and crime in Ghana, despite a significant proportion of the population identifying as people of faith. He argued that the church plays a vital role in upholding moral standards, and its absence would likely exacerbate the situation.
The President also acknowledged the Ashanti Region's significance as Ghana's Christian spiritual capital, expressing gratitude for the strong adherence to the Christian faith in the region. He encouraged churches to collaborate in expanding their outreach, ensuring that the message of Christ reaches remote communities.
“It is essential to emphasise the importance of fostering unity among Christian denominations. A divided church weakens its impact.
“But a united church can transform society. Let us work together to build a vibrant and influential Christian community that speaks with one voice on issues of national development,” he urged.
This event follows a similar gathering held with the clergy in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025, where President Mahama fellowshipped with the clergy and offered thanksgiving to God for the government's electoral successes.
