Ghana to Receive 40 More West African Deportees from US
Accra, Ghana - September 18, 2025 - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed that Ghana will receive an additional 40 West African deportees from the United States in the coming days. This announcement comes after a batch of 14 deportees arrived in the country earlier this month, sparking criticism from the Minority in Parliament.
Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana's decision to host the deportees is based solely on humanitarian grounds, citing the inhumane treatment of deportees abroad as a key factor. "We solidarised with them when we saw those images, the arrests, the violation of their rights, and their being detained against their will," he said. The Minister stressed that Ghana is not doing the US a favor but rather offering refuge and hope to fellow Africans.
In a conversation on Channel One TV’s The Point of View monitored by Lead News Online , ,Ablakwa assured that Ghana has implemented a rigorous vetting process to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. "We vet them before they come," he disclosed, adding that the government has put in place strict safeguards to prevent convicted hardened criminals from entering the country.
The government has explained that the arrangement with the US is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which does not require parliamentary ratification. Ablakwa clarified that MoUs are not typically sent to Parliament for ratification, but if the understanding is elevated to a full-blown agreement, the government will comply with Article 75 of the 1992 Constitution.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized Ghana's commitment to Pan-African solidarity, stating that the country's decision is grounded in its historic and legendary leadership in championing the rights of all Africans. "We want to continue to position Ghana as the Mecca for Africans," he said, highlighting the country's long-standing tradition of hosting freedom fighters and offering safe haven to those in need.
