Former NLA Director-General Defends Good Causes Record
Accra , Ghana – September 25,2025 - Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) Samuel Awuku, has come under scrutiny by the Fourth Estate for the NLA's Good Causes Foundation expenditures.In response, Awuku published a detailed list of projects funded by the foundation, showcasing its positive impact across Ghana.
Awuku emphasized the foundation's commitment to turning revenue into social good, citing several key projects such as the construction of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the University of Ghana Hospital and payment of surgery bills for a seven-week-old baby with spina bifida.
He also mentioned that donations were also made to psychiatric hospitals and medical outreach programs nationwide ,the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Akyem Dwenase and provision of a smart laboratory for the Borstal Correctional Institute ,Scholarships awarded to brilliant but needy students ,support for teams like Real Tamale United and Hasaacas Ladies and sponsorships for festivals such as Hogbetsotso and Fetu Afahye.
The former NLA Boss countered allegations of misusing funds for "glamorous events," stating that approximately 95% of the funds went directly to charitable projects, while about 5% was used for corporate engagement, including strategic sponsorships essential for growing the revenue base.
Sammy Awuku also defended the inclusion of NLA staff as beneficiaries, noting that around 150 staff members received educational and medical support.
He cited international endorsements from the World Lottery Association and former Maltese President H.E. Dr. George Vella, as well as verified financial growth in the Auditor-General's reports, to support the foundation's record of transformative impact.
