Kyei Mensah-Bonsu urges parliament leadership to resolve impasse
Accra, Ghana - October 29 2024 - Ghana's December 7 general elections are facing a potential parliamentary crisis, and former Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu is urging Parliament's leadership to engage in dialogue with Speaker Alban Bagbin to resolve the impasse.
The current Member of Parliament for Suame stressed that parliamentary unity is crucial, especially with the elections drawing near.
The crisis began when Speaker Bagbin declared four parliamentary seats vacant on October 17, leading to the House's indefinite adjournment. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu warned that the continued deadlock could impact the legal and procedural frameworks necessary for a smooth election cycle.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration in resolving the tensions.
Addressing the media on Monday, October 28, 2024, he noted, "Maybe we need to engage because elections should be held. And if elections must be held, every time that the presidential and general elections are going to be held, the Electoral Commission, for instance, will bring a CI to regulate the elections.
“What happens if they have not brought it? What happens to the conduct of elections? We need a vote on account for the next succeeding financial year and that has not been done. I think we need to have Parliament recalled to deal with this.”
