President Mahama Suspends Chief Justice Torkornoo Amid Probe

Jubilee House/Accra, Ghana - 22 April, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has made a historic move, suspending Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case against her.

Three separate petitions had been filed, seeking her removal from office, and after reviewing her response, the President determined that a formal inquiry was warranted.

According to a statement from the Presidency and signed by Government Communications Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, a five-member committee, chaired by Justice Gabriel Pwamang, has been set up to investigate the allegations. The committee's members include Justice Samuel Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo, Major Flora Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Professor James Dzisah of the University of Ghana.

The suspension, announced on April 22 by the Presidency, marks a significant moment in Ghana's judicial history. The allegations, though not publicly disclosed, have sparked debate about judicial accountability and the integrity of the judiciary's leadership.

The President's decision was taken in consultation with the Council of State, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. The Chief Justice's suspension will remain in effect until the committee completes its investigation and submits its findings.
