Justice Sophia Akuffo Defends Council of State Role, Vows to Provide Impartial Advice to Mahama

Accra, Ghana -19 Feb, 2025 - Sophia Akuffo, former Chief Justice of Ghana, has reaffirmed her commitment to providing impartial advice as a member of the Council of State.
Akuffo, who was sworn in alongside other members, emphasized her independence and qualifications for the role.
Speaking on her new position to journalists after their swearing in by the President at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday February 18, Akuffo highlighted her extensive experience as a former Chief Justice, stating that she is well-equipped to provide expert advice to the president.
“I am a former Chief Justice. Am I not? Do I or do I not qualify?'' she questioned.
“I am there in my own right simply as a former Chief Justice. I am not even there representing the Judicial Service.”
“The Council of State is a body that is supposed to be advising the president. I am not going to be singing his master’s voice, so to speak. An adviser does not parrot.
“An adviser speaks with honesty. An adviser looks to the best interest not only of the person they are advising but of the function the person is serving,” she added.
As a member of the Council of State, Akuffo will play a crucial role in shaping Ghana's development agenda.
Her expertise and independence will be invaluable assets in providing informed advice to the president on key governance and policy issues and her comments aim to dispel any concerns about her independence and ability to provide unbiased guidance.
