Ghana's Parliament Resumes Sittings Amidst Post-Election Landscape

Ghana's Parliament is set to resume sittings today Dec 16 at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), marking a significant milestone following the country's pivotal general elections on December 7.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious, securing a parliamentary majority and altering the balance of power in the legislature.

The December 7 polls saw several high-profile Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lose their seats, including Ursula Owusu-Ekulful, Henry Quartey, and KT Hammond. The NDC's electoral triumph also extended to the presidential race, with John Dramani Mahama defeating the NPP's candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Today's sitting is expected to address critical post-election issues, including the transition to a new administration and discussions on key legislative priorities for the incoming government. The meeting will take place at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), following an official circular from the Speaker's Office on December 11.

The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, had summoned Parliament to resume its functions on December 2, emphasizing the importance of this gathering in light of recent political developments. However, before the elections, Speaker Bagbin had declined requests from the Majority Caucus to recall Parliament for urgent legislative matters, sparking debate among lawmakers.
