Internal conflict rocks Ghana Freedom Party as factions disagree on Presidential Candidate
Accra, Ghana - Nov 5, 2024 - The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is grappling with internal turmoil as two rival factions submit conflicting letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the party's participation in the December 7 general elections.
This development follows the sudden passing of the party's founder and former flagbearer, Akua Donkor.
Conflicting Letters
At the center of the controversy is the party's presidential candidacy. General Secretary George Afful officially notified the EC of the party's decision to endorse Philip Kwabena Agyemang, also known as Roman Fada, as their presidential candidate. Roman Fada, a renowned radio host, was initially chosen by Akua Donkor as her running mate for the 2024 elections.
However, another letter from GFP National Organiser Richard Botchway states that, after consulting with Akua Donkor's family, the party has decided to withdraw from the presidential race entirely. This decision raises significant implications for the party's potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.
Conflicting Decisions
- Endorsement of Roman Fada: George Afful's letter confirms Roman Fada as the party's presidential candidate, complying with the EC's directive to nominate a new candidate within 10 days.
- Withdrawal from Elections: Richard Botchway's letter announces the party's withdrawal from the presidential race, citing consultation with Akua Donkor's family.
The GFP's internal conflict has sparked uncertainty about the party's future in the December 7 elections. The Electoral Commission has yet to comment on the conflicting letters, leaving the party's fate hanging in the balance.
