Violence erupts in Asesewa as NDC, NPP clashes over DRIP equipment
Asesewa, Ghana - A tense standoff between supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asesewa turned violent, prompting a massive police deployment to quell the unrest.
The rival political factions engaged in a fierce brawl, sparked by a dispute over District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment bearing NPP logos.
NDC loyalists, suspicious of the equipment's presence at the NPP candidate's hotel, attempted to photograph it, only to be confronted by NPP supporters.
The situation quickly escalated, leaving several injured, including the NPP constituency chairman.
As police struggled to contain the chaos, reinforcements were called in from the regional command, including the counter-terrorism unit, to restore order.
In a provocative display, NPP supporters paraded the disputed equipment through Asesewa's streets before presenting it to the district assembly.
The NPP condemned the alleged attack on their chairman and demanded an immediate investigation, while the NDC's MP, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, denied claims that the NPP candidate had purchased the equipment.
A youth leader of the NPP, Salifu Mohammed, also denied involvement in the clash, despite being sought by police.
The incident has heightened concerns about electoral violence in the region, as political tensions simmer ahead of the polls.
