India PM Narendra Modi Arrives in Ghana for Historic 2-Day State Visit

Accra, Ghana - 2 July, 2025 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Accra, Ghana, on a two-day state visit, marking a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two countries. This visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades, highlighting the growing importance of their bilateral ties.

Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Kotoka International Airport, where he was received by Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama. The gesture underscores the strong diplomatic relations between the two nations.

During his visit, Modi is expected to hold talks with President Mahama to review their strong bilateral partnership and discuss ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, energy, and defense.

One of the highlights of the visit is Modi's address to Ghana's Parliament, a first for an Indian Prime Minister.

He will also meet with members of the Indian community in Ghana, which numbers around 15,000 people. The community has expressed excitement and high expectations from the trip, hoping it will strengthen ties between the two countries and bring benefits in areas like healthcare and trade.

The visit is part of Modi's broader diplomatic tour, which will also take him to Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. In Brazil, he will attend the 17th BRICS summit, further solidifying India's engagement with emerging economies.

Ghana is a significant partner for India in West Africa, with bilateral trade reaching $3.1 billion in 2024-2025. India is the largest destination for Ghanaian exports, primarily gold, cocoa, cashew nuts, and timber.

The two countries are expected to sign several bilateral agreements and Memoranda of Understanding across key sectors, potentially opening new doors for trade, infrastructure partnerships, technology exchange, and cultural collaboration.
