Independence Square Shut Until Jan 8 ahead of Mahama's Presidential Inauguration
Accra, Ghana - December 30, 2024 - Ghana is gearing up for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and preparations are in full swing. As part of the arrangements, the Independence Square and its surrounding areas will be closed to the public and tourists from midnight on December 31, 2024, to January 8, 2025.
In a Press Release issued on Monday December 30, 2024 and signed by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, the closure is aimed at ensuring a secure and smooth ceremony, with National Security cordoning off the facilities. This move is expected to facilitate the preparations and guarantee the safety of attendees.
''In line with preparation towards the swearing in ceremony of the President-elect (H.E. John Dramani Mahama) of the Fourth (4th) Republic of Ghana, the public and tourists are hereby informed that with effect from midnight of 31st December, 2024 to 8th January 2025, the Independence Square and its environs will be closed. The faciilities will be corded off by National Security,'' portions of the statement read.
The swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of a new era in Ghana's governance, and the government is leaving no stone unturned to make the event a success. With the closure of Independence Square, authorities are urging citizens and tourists to cooperate and make alternative arrangements during the specified period.
