Bawumia, Ken Agyapong, Adutwum, and Bryan Acheampong Pose for Photos as NPP Flagbearer Contest Heats Up
Accra, Ghana - 24 June, 2025 - The NPP flagbearer hopefuls, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, posed for photos after a meeting earlier today, signaling the ongoing contest for the party's leadership.
The meeting comes as the party's National Executive Council has set January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primary. Recent polls suggest Dr. Bawumia is in the lead, with 57% support among NPP voters and 48% among the general electorate.
However, Dr. Bawumia's association with past government controversies, including the PDS scandal and Agyapa Royalties deal, may impact his credibility.
Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong, a six-term MP for Assin Central, has been making waves with his populist stance and anti-establishment views. Despite coming second in the 2024 NPP presidential primary, Agyapong remains a formidable contender.
Agyapong's recent outreach efforts, including hosting 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) at a lavish lunch, have underscored his commitment to rebuilding the party and restoring dignity to public service.
His camp claims 50 MPs are backing him, although Dr. Bawumia has garnered the support of 60 NPP MPs.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister and current MP for Bosomtwe, has officially announced his candidacy, citing a lifelong call to serve the party and the country.
His achievements in transforming Ghana's education system, particularly in STEM fields, have earned him recognition.
Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Agriculture and current MP for Abetifi, has formed an exploratory committee to assess his viability as a candidate. His business acumen and entrepreneurial skills are notable, although controversies surrounding his past roles have raised concerns.
As the flagbearer contest heats up, the candidates will need to navigate the complexities of party politics, voter sentiment, and their own track records to emerge victorious. The outcome will not only determine the party's standard-bearer but also set the tone for the 2028 general elections.
