IGP Dampare vows to ensure Media Security in 2024 Polls
Accra, Ghana - Nov 21, 2024 - Ghana's Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has made a bold commitment to ensure the safety of media personnel during the 2024 General Elections.
In a meeting with senior journalists and news editors in Accra on Wednesday, 20th November, Dr. Dampare emphasized the crucial role the media plays in maintaining democracy, citing Ghana's reputation as a leader in democratic practices.
Key Measures to Enhance Media Safety
- Liaison Officers: The police will introduce dedicated liaison officers for all media houses nationwide, serving as direct links between the police and media establishments to address security concerns.
- Toll-Free Contact: A dedicated toll-free contact will be made available to the public for sharing information with the police as needed, secured in collaboration with telecommunications companies.
- Accurate Reporting: Dr. Dampare urged journalists to maintain the highest standards of accuracy in their election coverage, avoiding misinformation and disinformation that could undermine national stability
Dr. Dampare called for collective efforts to make the upcoming elections a landmark in Ghana's democratic history, marked by peace, security, and order. He expressed confidence that the measures put in place will enable media personnel to carry out their duties without fear, regardless of location.
