Mutharika Makes Historic Comeback: Wins Malawi Presidency at 85
Peter Mutharika brought down inflation in his first term and now has to do the same again

Malawi's former President Peter Mutharika has made a stunning comeback, winning the country's presidential election at the age of 85. According to official results, Mutharika secured 57% of the vote, surpassing incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, who garnered 33% of the votes.

In a gracious concession speech, Chakwera, a pastor-turned-politician, congratulated Mutharika on his "historic win," acknowledging the outcome despite expressing concerns over "irregularities" and "anomalies." Chakwera emphasized that these issues did not necessarily undermine the credibility of Mutharika's victory or the will of the Malawian people.

Analysts suggest that Mutharika's victory might be more of a rejection of Chakwera's leadership than a resounding endorsement of Mutharika's policies. During Chakwera's tenure, Malawi faced numerous challenges, including a severe shortage of fuel and foreign currency, with inflation soaring close to 30%, devastating cyclones and droughts linked to climate change that have worsened food insecurity, and criticism over the selective and slow handling of graft cases.

As Mutharika prepares to take office, he faces significant challenges, including stabilizing the economy and addressing the high cost of living. A frozen chicken costs around $20 in Lilongwe, a stark contrast to the daily income of $2 for many Malawians. Mutharika's campaign promise of "a return to proven leadership" resonated with voters, but he must now deliver on his pledges.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place between seven and 30 days after the announcement of the result. As Mutharika begins his new term, speculation about his health and stamina has sparked debate, given his advanced age.
