Hung Jury verdict leads to retrial in JB Danquah murder case
A high-profile murder trial in Ghana has taken a dramatic turn after a hung jury verdict prompted the presiding judge to order a retrial. Daniel Asiedu, the accused, stands charged with the murder of former Abuakwa North MP JB Danquah.
The jury delivered a split decision of 4:3, deeming Asiedu not guilty of robbery and murder.
However, the presiding judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, deemed the verdict inconclusive and insufficient for further action, leading to the discharge of the jury.
Asiedu's fate remains uncertain, as he will remain in custody pending the retrial. The case dates back to 2016, when Asiedu was arrested in connection with Danquah's murder. Prosecutors allege that Asiedu robbed and fatally stabbed Danquah at his residence.
The retrial is expected to provide a conclusive resolution to the case, addressing lingering questions surrounding the events of February 8, 2016.
Asiedu's defence team has maintained that the prosecution's case relies on circumstantial evidence, and that their client is innocent until proven guilty.
