Ghana Card registration for minors set to begin on October 7
Accra, Ghana - The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced plans to register minors aged 6-14 for the Ghana Card, starting October 7, 2024. This initiative aims to ensure every citizen is included in the national identification system.
The registration process will begin in schools across selected districts, providing easy access to eligible children. By targeting schools, the NIA seeks to streamline the process and make it convenient for parents and guardians to register their children.
According to Alfred Gazari, Deputy Director of Operations at the NIA, incorporating children into the national database is crucial for achieving comprehensive identification for all Ghanaians. This effort is part of the government's ongoing push to ensure every citizen has a Ghana Card.
“It’s important that we do such registration for children between 6 to 14 years. It’s part of the plan to register every Ghanaian in the country.
“We have done over 15 years, we have started with zero to 5 years and this is the last phase of the registration for all Ghanaians as well as those outside the country.”
“Everybody needs the card, without it, you can’t do anything meaningful. It’s important we rope the 6 and 14 years in,'' he stated.
The Ghana Card serves as proof of identity, citizenship, and residence, and is essential for accessing various services, including healthcare and banking.
Previously, children aged 6-14 were scheduled to register for the Ghana Card starting June 10, 2024, as part of a joint agreement between the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the NIA.
