Ghana's Bright Simons Joins Elite Panel for SA National Treasury

Accra, Ghana - 12 March, 2025 - As South Africa assumes the G20 Presidency, the country has established an elite panel of experts, including Ghana's Bright Simons, to tackle Africa's escalating debt crisis.
The Africa Expert Panel, convened by the South African National Treasury, will develop strategies to promote Africa's economic growth and debt management during South Africa's G20 Presidency.
Africa is facing an unprecedented debt crisis, with countries expected to pay nearly $89 billion in external debt service in 2025. The continent's debt burden is undermining efforts towards sustainable development and poverty alleviation, with over half of Africa's 1.3 billion people living in countries that spend more on interest payments than on essential social services.
The Africa Expert Panel, chaired by Trevor Manuel, will provide strategic advice and policy recommendations to enhance Africa's participation and influence in the G20. The panel's expertise will be crucial in finding solutions to Africa's debt crisis and promoting the continent's developmental interests.
Other distinguished panel members include Joel Netshitenzhe, Anthony Musonda Simpasa, and Carlos Lopes. The panel's work will be critical in advancing Africa's collective interests and promoting a unified African voice in global economic governance.
The Africa Expert Panel's High-Level Report will provide key recommendations for better coordination and alignment between South Africa and the African Union, ultimately promoting an African perspective in global economic governance.
In a statement, South Africa's Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana, expressed his gratitude to the panel members, stating that their expertise will be invaluable in shaping Africa's economic and financial engagements within the G20.
