Akandoh to Donate Equipment to Tamale Teaching Hospital After Staff Confrontation
Kwabena Mintah Akandoh is Ghana's Health Minister

Accra, Ghana - 24 April, 2025 - Ghana's Health Minister, Mintah Akando, has pledged to donate vital medical equipment to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, following a tense confrontation with staff over critical shortages that contributed to a patient's tragic death.

The move comes after a confrontation earlier this week sparked by the death of a patient due to lack of equipment, which led to health workers embarking on a strike.

Speaking at a press briefing, Minister Akando revealed plans to donate 35 critical medical items, including an EEG machine, ICU ventilator, and ECG machine, to the hospital. He acknowledged the health sector's decline over the past eight years, citing challenging circumstances for health professionals.
"I have some equipment, some consumables, and some medicines to be donated to the Tamale Teaching Hospital. We have an EEG as part of the donation, an Enableliser set, we have a fatal heart dictator, we have an ECG machine, we have an ICU ventilator...." he said, adding that "There are about 35 items that we are going to donate today."
The Minister appealed to striking health workers to reconsider their decision and engage in dialogue, emphasizing the government's commitment to rectifying the health sector's problems.
"The health sector of this country has experienced decline for the past eight years, and for that matter, I acknowledge that the health professionals have worked under challenging circumstances."
However, the Ghana Medical Association has countered with demands for an apology and reversal of the decision to dismiss the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
