Health Minister and IGP Receive DNA Results of 6 Helicopter Crash Victims
Accra, Ghana – 11 August, 2025 – The Mahama administration has made significant progress in identifying the victims of the military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno have received the DNA results of the remaining six victims from South Africa.
The helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including government officials and military personnel.
Due to the severe condition of the bodies, DNA analysis was necessary to confirm their identities. Samples were sent to South Africa for testing, and the results for Dr. Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed were received electronically on August 9, allowing for their burial according to Islamic tradition on August 10.
The DNA results for the remaining six victims were received by Health Minister Akandoh and IGP Yohuno at the Kotoka International Airport on August 10. President John Dramani Mahama confirmed that the forensic results for all victims have been received, and burial arrangements will be made in consultation with their families.
An interdenominational state funeral will be held on August 15 to honor the victims.
The government has declared a three-day national mourning period, and memorial activities have included wreath-laying ceremonies at the Ceremonial Gardens at the Presidency.
The receipt of the DNA results brings closure to the identification process, allowing the families to hold separate burial ceremonies with government support. The nation continues to mourn the loss of these prominent individuals, who were dedicated to public service and made significant contributions to Ghana's development.
