Get Ready to Pay More: 20% Increase in Public Transport Fares
Accra, Ghana – 5 August, 2025 –
The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council cited three main factors contributing to the fare adjustment which include failure of prices to respond to previous reduction arguing that despite a 15% fare reduction implemented on May 21, 2025, prices of spare parts, goods, and services have not decreased accordingly.
Also the transport operators cited the recent introduction of a GH¢1.00 per litre fuel levy which they said has led to an estimated 8% increase in fuel prices adding that deteriorating road conditions has increased vehicle maintenance costs.
Transport operators have been instructed to comply with the new fares and display them visibly at loading terminals. The operators are also calling on drivers, passengers, and the general public to cooperate for a smooth rollout of the revised fares.
The 20% increase in public transport fares is likely to affect commuters' daily expenses and may have implications for the overall cost of living in Ghana.
