GJA Orders Rerun of Ashanti Regional Chairman Election Over June 30 Poll Irregularities

Kumasi, Ghana – 14 August, 2025 – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has scheduled a rerun election for the Ashanti Regional Chairman position on August 22, 2025, due to significant procedural issues in the June 30 poll. The GJA in a statement noted that the Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee's decision to order a fresh election aims to ensure the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) identified critical irregularities, including the creation of a supplementary voter list on election day and eligibility concerns surrounding some names on the list.

Notably, a voter registered in the Greater Accra Region was allowed to vote in the Ashanti Region, which significantly impacted the outcome given the one-vote margin of victory. These infractions led the EDAC to conclude that a rerun was necessary to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.

A composite voters' register will be published this week on the GJA's website and regional platform, providing all candidates with access to it. This move aims to enhance transparency and fairness in the rerun election.

The voting which starts at 9 am is expected to be held at the Electoral Commission's regional office in Kumasi

The GJA has urged members to participate in the electoral process and maintain professional conduct during the polls, ensuring a peaceful and credible election.
