Energy: John Jinapor Calls for Drastic Measures to Avoid Sector Collapse

Accra, Ghana - 20 March, 2025 - Ghana's Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has sounded the alarm over the energy sector's ballooning debt, warning that drastic measures are needed to prevent a catastrophic collapse.
According to him, the sector's current liabilities have skyrocketed to a staggering 80 billion Ghana Cedis, with the Electricity Company of Ghana's (ECG) debt alone exceeding 60 billion Ghana Cedis.
Minister Jinapor's dire warning came during an engagement with civil society organizations (CSOs) in Accra on Tuesday March 18, 2025, where he emphasized the urgent need for stringent measures to prevent a major crisis in the energy sector.
The minister identified financing as a key challenge, appealing to CSOs to help find solutions to the sector's deepening financial woes.
The Ghanaian government has pledged to work towards improving the energy sector, but the clock is ticking. With the sector's debt showing no signs of abating, experts warn that swift action is necessary to prevent a devastating collapse that would have far-reaching consequences for the country's economy and citizens.
As Ghana struggles to get its energy sector back on track, the government's proposed interventions, outlined in the 2025 Budget Speech, aim to restore financial stability and enhance efficiency.
