Parliament Probes ECG's Financial Woes Amid Ghc2 Billion Deficit

Accra, Ghana - 16 May, 2025 -The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is facing parliamentary scrutiny today, as it appears before the Energy Committee to address its mounting financial challenges, which are believed to be a significant contributor to the energy sector's Ghc2 billion monthly funding deficit.
According to Energy Minister John Jinapor, the deficit is significantly impacting the sector's operations. The ECG management is expected to respond to these concerns and provide insights into the power distribution firm's financial struggles.
Chairman of the Energy Committee, Emmanuel Bedzrah, stated that the committee is meeting with various stakeholders in the power sector to identify the root cause of the challenges.
“We will be looking at their work, plan, and vision for the sector. They are the distributors of power. Currently, we are meeting with the generators, and we met with the transmitters yesterday. Everybody knows it is ECG that brings power into their homes. So, they should come and tell us, why we are not getting power in our homes.
“The generators say they have enough generating capacity and that the problem will have to do with financing, ECG is the final distributor who receives finance from customers and pays it to the others so they should come and tell us what their problem is,” he stated in an interview with Citi News.
