Cholera Claims 14 Lives in Ghana's Western Region
A cholera outbreak in Ghana's Western Region has claimed 14 lives, with over 800 cases reported across eight districts. The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and Effia-Kwesimintsim municipality have been identified as the epicentres of the outbreak.
Health officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution to prevent further spread of the disease. "Personal hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of cholera," Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, Western Regional Director of Health Services stated in an interview with Citi News.
“Currently, about 8 districts have reported cholera cases and I must say that up till now, the facilities within these 8 districts, have managed over 800 cases and that is a lot.

“We have lost 14 people so far, currently, the epicentre is Sekondi-Takoradi and adjoining districts, Shama and Ahanta West. We’re appealing to everybody to take the basic precautions. It’s so important if we don’t do that we’re going to lose more people, so please personal hygiene is very important, we must wash our hands, and the food we eat must be warm. As soon as anybody gets these symptoms, he/she must report to the nearest health facility,'' he added.
The Regional Public Health Promotion office has intensified its awareness campaign and preventive measures, including a ban on the sale of vegetables by food vendors. Cholera treatment is free, and health facilities have the necessary logistics to care for affected individuals.
In a related development, the Deputy Director in charge of Public Health, Dr. Gifty Amugi, has announced that free cholera vaccinations are available for children over one year.
She encouraged parents are encouraged to ensure their children receive the vaccine to protect them against the disease.
