Tragedy Strikes Gaza as Israeli Fire Kills Palestinians Waiting for Food

At least 50 Palestinians were killed and 400 injured on Wednesday while waiting for food near a crossing in northern Gaza, according to a hospital report. The incident occurred as US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Israel for talks with Israeli officials. Witkoff's visit comes amid stalled ceasefire and hostage release deal negotiations.

The clash highlights the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where the population faces severe food shortages and malnutrition. The UN-backed global food security experts warned that the "worst-case scenario of famine" is unfolding among Gaza's 2.1 million population. Malnutrition-related deaths have surged, with 154 reported since the start of the war.

The crisis is attributed to Israel's control over aid deliveries, with the UN blaming Israel for man-made mass starvation in Gaza. However, Israel insists there are no restrictions on aid and no starvation. Despite implementing measures to facilitate aid distribution, including daily "tactical pauses" in military operations and designated humanitarian corridors, the UN says these efforts are insufficient to meet the population's needs.

The UN human rights office reports over 1,050 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces while trying to access food aid since late May. At least 766 of these deaths occurred near aid distribution centers operated by US private security contractors.

As the humanitarian crisis deepens, international pressure mounts on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza. Witkoff's visit aims to address the situation, but the path forward remains uncertain. The UN continues to call for unimpeded humanitarian access and an end to hostilities to alleviate the suffering of Gaza's civilians.
