Accra, Ghana - September 19, 2025 - Ghana's President, John Dramani Mahama, is set to embark on a crucial visit to China in October 2025, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed the development in a television interview on Channel One, stating that China extended a special invitation to President Mahama, who will be President Xi's guest in Beijing.

“China has extended a special invitation to President Mahama, and in October, he will be President Xi’s guest in Beijing,” he emphasized.

This visit forms part of Ghana's efforts to strengthen relations with countries in the Global South, including China, India, Japan, and the Gulf states. As Western partners focus on domestic challenges, Ghana is diversifying its partnerships to promote economic growth and development. The country's long-standing policy of "friends of all, enemies of none" will continue to guide its foreign relations.

Ghana and China have enjoyed a robust partnership in recent years, with bilateral trade reaching $11.84 billion in 2024, making it China's largest trading partner. In July, Beijing approved a $30 million grant for the construction of a modern market in Aflao, Volta Region. The agreement was signed by Minister Ablakwa and Chinese Ambassador Tong Defa.

During the visit, President Mahama and President Xi will likely discuss ways to build on existing cooperation, with additional projects under consideration. Ghana's engagement with China is based on mutual respect and national interest, without compromising relations with other partners. President Mahama's upcoming discussions in Beijing will explore new areas of cooperation and strengthen the foundation for future collaboration ².

Ghana and China have a long history of diplomatic relations, dating back to the era of Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. President Mahama has previously met with President Xi, and their countries have collaborated on various projects. The Chinese government has also shown its commitment to Ghana's development, with President Xi's special envoy attending President Mahama's inauguration in January 2025.
