Education Sector in Crisis as TEWU Declares Indefinite Strike
Accra, Ghana - September 19, 2025 - The Teachers and Educational Workers' Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting Friday, September 19, 2025. The industrial action aims to pressure the government to address long-standing concerns of non-teaching staff across the country's education sector.
TEWU's decision to strike stems from the government's persistent failure to meet the union's demands, despite exhausting all formal channels. The union's General Secretary, King James Azortibah, stated that repeated efforts to engage with management and relevant authorities have failed, leaving members frustrated and without resolution.
The strike is driven by several key demands, including immediate signing of conditions of service for non-teaching staff in public and technical universities, Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority, and Ghana Museums and Monuments Board. The union also demands inclusion of non-teaching staff of GES in the Continuous Professional Development Allowance scheduled for payment in September.
Additionally, TEWU seeks to resolve long-standing promotion grievances, particularly cases where staff passed interviews but remain unpaid or unconfirmed in their positions. The union is also demanding payment of eight months of Tier Two pension contributions and recalculation of interest accrued from delayed Tier Two deductions between 2010 and 2016.
The strike is expected to disrupt activities in public universities, technical universities, senior high schools, and other educational institutions across Ghana. TEWU has urged all its members to participate fully in the industrial action, signaling their commitment to fighting for their rights until the government addresses their concerns.
