GH¢20m Defamation Suit: COCOBOD CEO Takes Abronye DC to Court
Accra,Ghana,August 26,2025 - Dr. Randy Abbey, Acting CEO of COCOBOD, has dragged Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, to court over alleged defamatory comments made during a public broadcast. Dr. Abbey is demanding GH¢20 million in damages for the purported harm to his reputation.
Abronye accused Dr. Abbey of misusing public resources and engaging in corrupt practices at COCOBOD. Specifically, he claimed that Dr. Abbey transported a personal chair from Accra to cocoa farms using multiple state-owned Land Cruisers, refusing to use chairs provided by farmers. Additionally, Abronye alleged that Dr. Abbey manipulated internal appointments to facilitate the embezzlement of public funds.
Dr. Abbey has categorically denied the allegations, describing them as entirely baseless and aimed at undermining his professional reputation. His legal team stresses the importance of truthful and responsible public discourse, especially when it concerns individuals in positions of public trust.
The lawsuit, filed on August 26, 2025, seeks a declaration that Abronye's statements are defamatory ,a full retraction and unqualified apology published on all platforms ,removal of all defamatory content from the internet ,general, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GH¢20 million ,a perpetual injunction against further defamatory publications ,legal costs and further relief as the court deems fit.
Abronye DC has not publicly responded to the lawsuit.
This is not the first time Abronye has faced a defamation lawsuit. In July 2025, Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, sued Abronye for GH¢20 million over alleged defamatory remarks. Brown claimed that Abronye accused him of forging official documents, unlawfully authorizing the sale of forest lands, and deliberately backdating letters to implicate the previous NPP administration.
