Ghana's Railway revival takes shape with New Tema-Mpakadan Line
Accra, Ghana - Nov 22, 2024 - A major milestone has been reached in Ghana's efforts to revamp its rail transport infrastructure. The country has inaugurated a new 97-kilometre railway line connecting the industrial hub of Tema to Mpakadan in the Eastern Region. This development is expected to significantly boost transport and trade logistics in Ghana.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to revitalising Ghana's railway sector, highlighting the project's potential to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities during the commissioning ceremony of the project.
“This historic achievement, the first-ever standard gauge railway line in Ghana, symbolises the bold strides we are making to modernise our transport infrastructure to drive the economic growth of our nation.
“This project has proof of what is possible when vision, commitment and hard work align. As president, I pledged to prioritise the revival and expansion of Ghana’s railway sector and today, we take another giant leap forward in fulfilling that promise,” he stated.
Ghana's railway expansion plans are part of a broader strategy to develop a multi-modal transportation network, improving connectivity between Tema Port and the country's northern regions. The government aims to build over 4,500km of railway track across the country, with the Tema-Mpakadan project being a key component of this effort.
The project is also part of the Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which aims to build a 1,000km railway line between the Port of Tema in Ghana and Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso.
