GES Assures Teachers of Prompt Resolution to Salary Arrears and ID Issuance Issues
Accra, Ghana - 24 June, 2025 - The Ghana Education Service (GES) has moved to address the concerns of newly posted teachers who recently picketed over delays in salary payments and staff ID issuance. The affected teachers, numbering over 12,000, were recruited in 2024 and have been facing challenges in receiving their full remuneration.
According to the GES, the Ministry of Education has requested an extension of the expired financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to enable the processing of salary arrears spanning nearly ten months.
The Service, in a statement, has also disclosed that a technical committee, comprising representatives of the aggrieved teachers, has been established to improve communication and coordination throughout the resolution process.
The GES revealed that a nationwide staff validation exercise conducted in March 2025 uncovered anomalies in the recruitment process, prompting the current round of corrective actions. Some 2,113 teachers who were issued staff IDs have yet to receive payment, while an additional 582 did not receive staff IDs due to inconsistencies in Ghana Card details, SSNIT numbers, and instances of self-reposting.
GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, has called for calm among the affected teachers, assuring them of the Service's commitment to resolving the matter.
The GES has also confirmed that a budgetary allocation has been made in the 2025 national budget to support payments to the affected personnel.
“We are pleased to confirm that budgetary allocations have been made for these teachers in the 2025 National Budget. We remain optimistic that the necessary funds will be released soon,'' portions of the statement read.
The Service is working to address both immediate concerns and long-term reforms to prevent future occurrences. GES is also urging unified representation among teacher groups to help streamline communication and resolve outstanding issues more effectively.
