Ghana Breaks Ground with Legal Timber Export Under New EU Framework
Accra ,August 19,2025 - Ghana has made history by becoming the first African country and second globally, after Indonesia, to export timber and timber products to the European Union under the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licensing regime. This milestone achievement marks a significant step in Ghana's commitment to sustainable forest management and trade in legal timber.
The FLEGT Licensing Regime
The FLEGT license is a document issued by timber-producing countries that have ratified a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) with the EU. It certifies that timber or timber products exported under that license are legal. The license ensures that timber exported to the EU by partner countries is harvested legally, promoting sustainable forest management.
Companies Receive Certificates
Five Ghanaian companies have received the first six certificates to export timber and timber products to the European market. These companies are:
- Samartex Timber and Plywood Co. Ltd
- Logs and Lumber Ltd
- JCM Company Ltd
- Mere Plantations Ltd
- West Coast Wooden Products Ghana Ltd
Impact on Ghana's Forestry Sector
The FLEGT licensing regime is expected to boost Ghana's timber industry by:
- Promoting Sustainable Forest Management: By certifying only legally sourced timber, Ghana is strengthening its fight against illegal logging and promoting sustainable forest management.
- Enhancing Market Confidence: The FLEGT license provides assurance that timber products have been harvested and processed legally, enhancing market confidence in Ghana's timber products.
- Supporting Climate Commitments: The FLEGT regime supports Ghana's climate commitments and obligations under the EU Deforestation Regulation.
EU Support
The European Union has expressed commitment to supporting Ghana in implementing the FLEGT licensing regime. The EU has pledged to provide technical assistance and resources to help Ghana sustainably manage its forest resources. In fact, the EU is planning to provide additional funding worth €37 million to support the improved management and conservation of natural resources in Ghana.
With the FLEGT licensing regime now in place, Ghanaian companies can export timber and timber products to the EU market, potentially boosting exports and economic growth. The Forestry Commission and relevant stakeholders will continue to work together to ensure the effective implementation of the FLEGT licensing regime.
