GBC Workers Declare Director-General Persona Non Grata, Demand His Immediate Removal

Accra, Ghana - 20 March, 2025 - A deepening crisis is unfolding at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as the Unionised Workers of the state broadcaster call for the immediate removal of Director-General Professor Amin Alhassan.

The union's demands, made at a press conference on Thursday, March 20, 2025, cite a loss of confidence in Professor Alhassan's leadership and raise serious concerns over the financial management of the corporation.

According to Sam Nat Kevor, Chairman of the union, Professor Alhassan's continued tenure is "untenable" as he has become detached from the aspirations of both the workforce and the corporation. The union also highlighted that Professor Alhassan's official term ended on October 1, 2023, yet the National Media Commission (NMC) has allowed him to remain in office.

The union is demanding a comprehensive forensic audit of the corporation's finances under Professor Alhassan's leadership, citing specific areas of concern including Internally Generated Funds (IGF), payments related to the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 13th African Games, colocation rentals, and the sale or lease of GBC lands.

Furthermore, the union is pushing for full compensation for technicians and production teams who worked during the 13th African Games, alleging that they have yet to receive their due payments. The union has declared Professor Alhassan persona non grata and insists that he must vacate his position immediately.

“We also demand an immediate investigation and forensic audits of the financial dealings at the GBC during the tenure of the Director-General.''

"We can no longer work under his leadership. His continued stay is detrimental to the progress of GBC," Kevor added.

The development has raised concerns about the stability and effectiveness of the GBC under Professor Alhassan's leadership.
