Mahama Denounces Killing of Military Officer in Bawku, Calls for Peace

Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana - 20 March, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the killing of a military officer in Bawku, as well as the reported military retaliation that left several residents, including women and children, injured.

Mahama's remarks came during his "Thank You Tour" visit to the Upper East Region on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

Mahama emphasized that members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent to protect life, limb, and property. He stressed that it is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict they are not a party to.

The former President also condemned the high-handed response of the military, which resulted in assaults and injuries to many innocent civilians. He urged restraint and effective intelligence gathering to identify and bring the culprits to book.

Mahama extended his condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and sympathies to those assaulted or injured in the military counteraction. He emphasized that Ghana's progress depends on shared efforts towards a common purpose and collective vision for prosperity.

“I wish to take this opportunity to condemn the killing of a member of the Ghana army recently in Bawku. The members of the Ghana Armed Forces in the conflict zone are peacekeepers who have been sent there to protect life, limb, and property.

“It is unacceptable for them to become targets of a conflict to which they are not a party to. I, in the same vein, wish to condemn the high-handed response of our men in uniform, which resulted in assaults and injuries of many innocent civilians.

“I can understand the righteous anger at the loss of a colleague serviceman, but we must exercise restraint and use effective intelligence gathering to identify and bring the culprits to book.

“I wish, on this occasion, to extend my condolence to the family of the deceased soldier and, at the same time, to extend my sympathies to all those who were assaulted or injured in the military counteraction.

“The progress of our nation depends on the shared effort of all its people towards a common purpose and a collective vision for prosperity. The Upper East Region, like every other part of Ghana, deserves its fair share of development,'' he added.

The Upper East Region, particularly Bawku, has been plagued by violence and conflict in recent years. Mahama's visit and condemnation of the violence are seen as a call for peace and stability in the region.

In a related development, Mahama praised the Asantehene for his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict and called on the factions involved to cooperate with the Otumfuo.
