Francis-Xavier Sosu Leads Charge to Reintroduce Anti-Witchcraft Bill, Urges Presidential Assent

Accra, Ghana - 07 March, 2025 - A Ghanaian lawmaker, Francis-Xavier Sosu, has reignited efforts to pass legislation aimed at shielding elderly women from witchcraft accusations, a practice that has led to widespread human rights abuses.
The Member of Parliament for Madina, has reintroduced the Anti-Witchcraft Accusation Bill, which was initially passed by Parliament in 2023 but failed to become law.
The bill seeks to criminalize witchcraft accusations and provide protection to vulnerable elderly women who have been subjected to physical and emotional abuse, often resulting in displacement and social isolation.
Mr. Sosu has garnered support from nine other MPs, who have joined him in pushing for the bill's passage through the 9th Parliament. The team includes:
- Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi)
- Comfort Doyoe (Ada)
- Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw (Wa East)
- Hajia Laadi Ayii Ayamba (Pusiga)
- Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi (Asante-Akim Central)
- Helen Adjoa Ntoso (Krachi West)
- Dzifa Gomashie (Ketu South)
- Zuwera Ibrahimah (Salaga South)
- Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (La-Dadekotopon)
The move has been welcomed by human rights advocates, who have long campaigned for an end to witchcraft accusations and related abuses.
