Accra, Ghana - 04 May, 2025 - A fire outbreak at the Achimota Bulk Supply Point has plunged several parts of Accra into darkness, disrupting electricity supply to numerous homes and businesses.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 4, 2025, prompted the Ghana National Fire Service to swiftly respond and work tirelessly to bring the blaze under control. Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the facility, drawing the attention of nearby residents and passersby.
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed the incident and apologized for the inconvenience, assuring customers that power would be restored as soon as the fire is fully extinguished and safety assessments are completed.
ECG's General Manager for Sub-Transmission in Accra, Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, explained that a blast on a protective device caused the outage, affecting areas such as Kanda, Cantonments, Kwabenya, Haatso, Legon, and Madina.
Power was restored to the affected areas around 1:20 pm after ECG technicians transferred the load to other supply points in Accra.
The affected areas initially reported included Achimota, North Industrial area, Kaneshie, Kokomlemle, Asylum Down, Pig Farm, Kotobabi, Circle, Adabraka, New Town, Nima, GIMPA, Keseiman, and UGMC. However, according to ECG, some areas like Kanda, Cantonments, Kwabenya, Haatso, Legon, and Madina were affected, with power being restored after swift action.
