Jinapor Directs ECG to Install 200 New Transformers to Tackle Power Outages
John Abdulai Jinapor is Ghana's Energy Minister

Accra, Ghana - 28 May, 2025 -  To address the recent power outages and meet the increasing demand for electricity, Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to install 200 additional transformers in key urban areas, thereby bolstering the country's power distribution infrastructure.

Speaking at the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on May 28, Jinapor highlighted the need to improve transmission and distribution networks to meet growing industrial and residential demand.

Ghana's power supply is holding steady, according to Jinapor, despite recent sporadic outages, and the country is still exporting electricity to its neighbors.

According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will implement the directive, injecting new life into the power distribution system.

“I’m happy to note that despite the challenges we inherited, the recent report I got is that recent power generation has been stable, and we have even begun exporting some power. What we need to do is to continue to improve the transmission network and the distribution network,” he stated.

“In this regard, I have granted approval to the ECG to, as a matter of urgency, inject about 200 new transformers in our major capital cities in order to ensure that we do not just generate power, but we’re able to transmit power and distribute that to consumers in an effective and efficient manner,” Jinapor added.

This development is expected to ensure efficient power distribution to consumers, building on the recent stability in power generation and consolidating the government's efforts to meet the country's energy needs.
