Africa Needs $43-55bn Anually to Achieve its Energy Goals - John Jinapor

Accra, Ghana 02 Feb, 2025 - Ghana's Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has issued a stark warning about the severity of Africa's energy crisis.

Speaking at the 2025 Africa Prosperity Dialogues, Jinapor emphasized that the continent's inadequate power supply is a significant hurdle to achieving universal electricity access and sustainability.

The minister revealed that Africa requires an annual investment of $43-55 billion in the energy sector until 2040, but currently, only about $9 billion is being mobilized. This funding gap is crippling the continent's efforts to achieve its energy goals.

Jinapor urged African leaders to adopt innovative solutions and strengthen collaborations with the private sector to address the energy crisis. He cited the Inga dam project as a potential game-changer, capable of providing affordable power for industrialization.

“If Africa were to collaborate and develop the Inga dam, it could potentially provide the cheapest source of power which is needed for industrialisation. And 100 megawatts of energy is quite the age when it comes to Africa. Our dialogues here must focus on actionable solutions rather than the traditionally well‑documented approach of talking about the already‑grown challenges,” he stated.

“We are also committed to investing in energy to make a life stay on as a foundation pillar to power our policy of a 24‑hour economy, which we are committed to achieving.''

“Ghana is committed to leading Africa’s energy transition while advancing sustainable development,” he indicated.

''Under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we are committed to embarking on the progressive path towards ensuring that we achieve renewable and sustainable energy, not just for Ghana, but for Ghana to serve as a reliable hub for the entire West African subregion,'' he added.
