EC Declares Prof Seidu as Tamale Central MP-Elect After Unopposed Election
Tamale ,Ghana – September 2025 - The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Tamale Central constituency. This declaration follows Professor Seidu's emergence as the sole candidate in the by-election, which was necessitated by the tragic death of the incumbent MP, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash nearly two months ago.
Initially, three candidates filed to contest the seat, including Professor Seidu, a candidate from the People's National Convention (PNC), and another from the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG). However, both opposing candidates later withdrew their candidacies, leaving Professor Seidu unchallenged. In accordance with Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, the EC reopened nominations for a 10-day period to allow potential new entrants to step forward. Despite this extension, no additional candidates filed, paving the way for Professor Seidu's declaration as MP-elect.
NDC's Deputy Regional Secretary, Ziblim Saaka, expressed gratitude to the constituents and assured them of inclusive and development-driven leadership under Professor Seidu's representation. "We believe in his capabilities, and I can assure you that by the end of the four years, he will be one of the best-performing MPs in Ghana," Saaka stated. Professor Seidu is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to assume his duties.
This development marks a significant moment in the political landscape of Tamale Central, with Professor Seidu becoming the first person to enter Ghana's Parliament in the Fourth Republic without a parliamentary vote.Professor Seidu brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Executive Secretary of the Water Resources Commission and head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana.
With his declaration as MP-elect, Professor Seidu will now take up his seat in Parliament, representing the interests of the Tamale Central constituency.
