Energy Minister Receives Report on Private Sector Participation in Power Distribution

Accra, Ghana - 03 April, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has received a comprehensive report on private sector participation in the power distribution sector.

The report, presented on April 2, 2025, is expected to guide the government's future policies and strategies, potentially transforming the sector.

The report highlights three key options for facilitating private sector involvement: Entity Concession, Multiple Lease, and Service Franchise. These options aim to increase efficiency, improve customer service, and mobilize private investment to modernize infrastructure and technology.

Hon. Jinapor emphasized the government's commitment to creating a conducive environment for private investment in the power sector, addressing current inefficiencies, and enhancing energy distribution to meet growing demand.

He reiterated that the government will not sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo).

The report stresses the need for regulatory frameworks that support private sector engagement while ensuring consumer protection and fair pricing mechanisms. It also suggests strategic partnerships between government and private entities to leverage new technologies and innovative practices.

As discussions begin on implementing these recommendations, the Minister reiterated the government's commitment to transparency, fairness, and local content participation in shaping a future-ready energy sector that benefits all citizens.
